The Northern Natal Invitational Athletics Meet was hosted at Pioneer High School on the 2nd of February 2017. Fifteen athletes qualified to take part and did excellently. The following athletes from Newcastle High School performed exceptionally well and stood out above the rest.
- Siyanda Buthelezi 1st in the Boys u/17 High Jump.
- Dean Chutel 1st in the Boys u/15 High Jump.
- Nonkululeko Hlope 2nd in the Girls u/17 High Jump.
- Sandile Hlayise 2nd in the 200m and 3rd in the 100m Boys u/15 sprints.
- Minenhle Mgadi 3rd in the Girls u/15 90m Hurdles.
Over all the above athletes obtained 2 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 2 bronze medals. Furthermore the Newie athletes qualified to attend the Amajuba District Athletics trials on the 17th of February 2017, where they once again performed phenomenally well. The outstanding athlete; Siyanda Buthelezi once again came first in the Boys u/17 High Jump and qualified to go to the provincial athletics trials in Durban held on the 24th and 25th of February.
Due to an immense amount of time and effort taken by these learners to prepare themselves mentally and physically, they were able to deliver a high standard of results that has definitely made the Newie family proud.
