Newcastle High School’s tennis team has a terrific new face. The ever-growing group consists of Lordson Esua, Yasthi Anoop, Deveshni Naidoo, Kwando Vilakazi, Sphelelo Simelane, Maxine Daubert, Thando Shama, Luyanda Ngwenya, Zanothando Simelane, Mavezi Mbatha and Minenhle Zulu. The 2019 squad has brought pride to the school and demonstrated inner fortitude in their matches against Glencoe, Ladysmith and St. Dominics this year. Minenhle Zulu says on the team’s work ethic, “If you work hard at something, then you will master it!” The team spends Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays in training. “We are determined to face other schools with pride and dignity,” says Kwando Vilakazi. “Playing tennis two to three times a week is one of the best total-body workouts. It builds your stamina levels and boosts your co-ordination skills,” says Deveshni Naidoo. “We thank Mr Hariparsad and Newcastle High School for giving us this opportunity.”
